Poornima Varma graduated from Monash University with Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 2009 and completed her basic physician training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in 2013. After this, she went progressed through physician training in Gastroenterology between Royal Melbourne Hospital, Launceston General Hospital and Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne. Poornima then continued her final year through Monash Health and Cabrini Hospital with wide exposure to Hepatology and Inflammatory Bowel Disease. She was awarded her fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2016.
Whilst working as an accredited gastroenterologist, she has completed two years of advanced fellowship in Interventional Endoscopy at Monash Health and is trained in Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) and Capsule Endoscopy. She has also undertaken further training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney and is now trained in Single and Double Balloon-Assisted Enteroscopy and liver transplant ERCP.
Poornima is also an avid researcher with multiple research interests and publications in the field of gastroenterology. She attends conferences and endoscopy workshops regularly to remained skilled and up-to-date with the advancements in her field. Her clinical interests include pancreato-biliary and hepato-biliary disease, gastrointestinal malignancy and general gastroenterology. It also includes performing diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, in particular Gastroscopy, Colonoscopy, ERCP, EUS, Enteral Stenting, Capsule Endoscopy and Balloon Enteroscopy.
Poornima works at Austin Health and has private admitting rights to Cabrini Hospital in Malvern.
